Strategic Planning Process
The College has been operating under the 2020-2025 strategic plan and the results have been impressive. Student success has improved dramatically with a significant decrease in racial disparities. Retention and graduation rates have increased. Faculty continue to advance knowledge in the classroom and contribute to the betterment of society through scholarship and creative works. Fundraising is at an all-time high, engagement with workforce partners has been prioritized, and we have achieved new levels of financial sustainability and operational effectiveness. This has been a community effort and we should be proud of what we have accomplished. We have achieved a lot over the last five years, but we have room to grow and improve.
To that end, we are now in the process of developing a strategic plan that will help drive decision-making and direction-setting for the next five academic years. The plan that will emerge from this process will take John Jay College through 2030, a plan that will coincide with the University’s 2023-2030 Strategic Plan, Uplifting New York. While our plan will align with the broader CUNY plan, we will develop an innovative plan designed to enhance the educational journey of our unique student population; position the College to adapt proactively to changes within the University, City, and beyond; and further enhance the success of our graduates.
Starting in the spring of 2024, the Strategic Planning Subcommittee (SPS) initiated a process to develop a new strategic plan. The committee has and will continue to review and analyze dozens of relevant documents; develop an environmental scan; conduct strategic planning focus groups, mission and values review forums, visioning sessions, and college-wide meetings; and provide opportunities for members of the community to provide feedback electronically through this site.
A preliminary calendar detailing opportunities for you to participate in the process can be found here, but please note the following highlights:
- Forms requesting your feedback are available on this site. Different forms will be made available throughout the process, so continue to check back.
- Between January and early April, students, faculty, staff, and external groups will have opportunities to participate in focus groups on the priorities, goals, and objectives of the next plan. We are hoping to engage hundreds of members of our community in these focus groups.
- During February and May, we will share progress updates along with opportunities to provide feedback at college-wide forums.
- During March and April, there will be college-wide forums, along with input forms, that will be used to create a vision statement for the College.
Please check back on this site as there will be information and announcements added as we move through the spring 2025 semester. In addition, please be on the look out for important announcements on strategic planning from Christopher Shults, John Jay’s Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategy and strategic planning chair. Finally, we will add specific dates and locations for in-person participation opportunities to the John Jay calendar once they are finalized.
Thank you in advance for your participation in the development of our next strategic plan. We are committed to developing, implementing, and evaluating a plan developed in partnership with our entire community – one focused on student learning and educational outcomes, support for the dedicated faculty and staff, and enhanced operational effectiveness.
