International Graduate Students
Apply as an International Student and/or with International Documents
- In addition to the admission criteria that is listed for each graduate program, applicants who were educated outside of the United States must submit the following documents:
- An international credential evaluation report that includes a course-by-course analysis indicating the type of degree received, the U.S. equivalency of the degree, the graduation date, and a cumulative grade point average from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), and
- An official transcript in the original language from each postsecondary school/university attended in a sealed envelope (take note: many agencies will send us over the original foreign documents along with the completed evaluation but please confirm first with your chosen agency of this).
- While we do not make specific recommendations to students to choose a particular 3rd party company, some companies offer CUNY and John Jay Students special pricing like, SpanTran Evaluation Services (students should apply using this SpanTran Pathways - John Jay College link to get a discount on their evaluation). Prices do vary among companies and we recommend using companies who send official evaluations electronically or via email.
- Professional evaluations can take several weeks and in some cases over one month. Students should start evaluations well before the application deadlines as all documents are due in the office by the specific program application deadlines posted.
English Proficiency Test Scores
- Applicants who did not complete their undergraduate degree at a U.S., regional accredited, English-speaking institution are required to submit English proficiency requirements. Here is a list of countries that are exempt from taking an English proficiency exam, based on CUNY Policy: Please click here.
- The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand, in under an hour. John Jay College will accept a score of 105 or above. The test is taken via a computer with a camera and includes a proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample which are shared with John Jay College when you send your results.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report is required. John Jay College’s TOEFL code number is 2115-99. The required minimum TOEFL scores are 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test and 79-80 for the Internet-based test. Students may also take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic), or EIKEN . A score of 7.0 is required on the IELTS, 53 on the Pearson, or Grade 1 on the EIKEN.
- International applicants should apply by April 1st for fall admissions and by November 1st for spring admission. All supporting documentation must be received by the deadline. Applications completed after these deadlines are not guaranteed to be reviewed. Late applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
- International applicants who will require an F-1 student visa (or intend to continue maintaining F-1 status) to study in the United States will be contacted by an International Student Advisor once an offer of admission by the College is made. Click here for more information on the I-20 process.
