Jean Mills received her Ph.D. from The Graduate Center of the City University of New York in English literature, where she received The Florence Howe Award for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship, and her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College, where she graduated magna cum laude as a Mary Lyon Scholar. She specializes in Woolf Studies, Modernism, feminist theory, 20th Century British and Irish literature, Peace Studies, intellectual history, transatlantic cultural studies, and issues relating to the intersections of gender, sexuality, class, and culture. Her book, Virginia Woolf, Jane Ellen Harrison, and the Spirit of Modernist Classicism (The Ohio State University Press, 2014) investiages female friendship and mentorship and the influence of Cambridge Classicist, Jane Ellen Harrison, on Virginia Woolf's political and literary production.  Her most recent essays are "Virginia Woolf and the Politics of Class,"  forthcoming in Virginia Woolf: A Companion (Wiley Blackwell Publishers, 2015) and "The Critical Heritage of To the Lighthouse" in The Cambridge Companion to Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse (Cambridge University Press, 2014). “The Writer, the Prince, and the Scholar: Virginia Woolf, D.S. Mirsky, and Jane Harrison’s Translation from the Russian of The Life of the Archpriest Avvakum, by Himself,” has been anthologized in Leonard and Virginia Woolf: The Hogarth Press and the Networks of Modernism (Edinburgh University Press, 2010; 2012). Other publications include essays on Gertrude Stein and rap music, Virginia Woolf and pacifism, and women’s literature of the 1920’s and 1930’s. She is currently at work on the following book project: 1924: A Year in the Life of Virginia Woolf.
