My Sophomore Year
The Sophomore success team at John Jay designed the programs and events below to help you build the skills and experiences you need to reach your academic and professional goals. We encourage you to take advantage of these resources and participate in those that suit your goals best. These events cater to the interests of sophomores in the following areas: academic programs, experiential learning opportunities, academic progress, and network building.
August
Sophomore Signature Courses – Enroll in this course to satisfy your general education level 200 requirement and get extra assistance with your academic planning and pre-professional preparation as well as other sophomore-exclusive benefits and supports.
September
Sophomore Compass Newsletter – Look for the newsletter in your email to learn how other JJC students overcome challenges and achieve their goals, how to secure special opportunities and connect to resources, and about important events on campus that support your academic journey and long-term success.
Sophomore Kickoff – Attend this welcome-back event to connect with sophomores and network with representatives from key offices across campus. You will learn about experiential learning opportunities and supports available to sophomores.
Sophomore Challenge – Apply to this exclusive interactive workshop series to get assistance with setting your goals, building your professional portfolio, growing your network, and applying for at least two experiential learning opportunities such as internships, research assistantships, service learning, scholarships, leadership opportunities, and many other special opportunities. Offered 8 consecutive weeks starting in September through November.
Halfway to Graduation Celebration – If you earn 60 credits by the start of your 3rd year, you’ll receive an invitation to attend this celebration and receive a special pin in recognition of your achievements. You will have the opportunity to network with key offices and administrators and learn about opportunities that support your goals. This event is by invite only.

Plan Ahead, Get Ahead – Participate in this series of events (tabling, workshops, student panels, guest speakers, information sessions, etc.) to receive guidance on how to find and prepare for the opportunity that best suits your needs and strengths, learn about planning behaviors that increase your academic and professional prospects, and get connected to key resources as you plan for the spring term, summer, and junior year.
Re-Enrollment Campaign – Keep an eye on your email to receive step-by-step guidance and tips on registering for the correct classes in the following semester and staying on track for graduation. Emailed throughout the semester.
November
Application Clinics – If you’re enrolled in a Sophomore Signature course, you’ll be invited to these application clinics where you’ll receive guidance with the application process and materials while expanding your campus networks as you work together with other students to identify skills, experiences, and goals relevant to your application.
January

Sophomore Peer Leader – You are encouraged to apply for this on-campus paid position if you have earned between 54 and 90 credits and are interested in helping sophomores succeed. As a sophomore peer leader, you will provide guidance and support to current sophomores, facilitate engagement events, host information sessions, provide tips for success, and stay connected to students in a variety of ways. This is a great opportunity to gain employability skills such as leadership and collaboration while enhancing your resume.
