Learning Management System Transition

What is the transition?

The City University of New York (CUNY) is transitioning from our current Learning Management System (LMS), Blackboard, to D2L Brightspace. Beginning in the Fall of 2023, CUNY Office of Academic Affairs (CUNY OAA), CUNY Computing and Information Services (CUNY CIS), and staff across CUNY campuses will launch a multi-phase process to transition to the new platform and introduce it to the community university-wide. John Jay College will be among the first group of campuses transitioning to Brightspace, with our first courses to be offered in Summer 2024.

In the leadup to offering courses in Brightspace, CUNY OAA and CUNY CIS will configure the Brightspace environment and migrate courses for use in Brightspace.  While this work is ongoing, DOES Learning Management Systems staff will be trained on the new platform and bring that training to members of the John Jay community.  We anticipate offering training opportunities in late Fall 2023 and early Spring 2024 (dates TBD).

What is Brightspace?

D2L Brightspace is a comprehensive learning management system that is modern and easy to use for faculty, staff, and students. It offers capabilities to support teaching and learning across different modalities, supports growth in online learning, provides advanced analytics that contribute to student success, and lays a foundation for engaging learning experiences that facilitate Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) in online courses.

John Jay College Brightspace Transition Timeline

Fall 2023

  • All courses are taught in Blackboard
  • Brightspace training for Department of Online Education and Support staff
  • Courses in Blackboard from 2021-2023 are migrated to Brightspace
  • Brightspace Introductory demonstrations for faculty begin

Spring 2024

  • All courses are taught in Blackboard
  • Instructor training on Brightspace
  • Summer 2024 courses created in Brightspace in early April
  • Course redesign and development by instructors

Summer 2024

  • All courses and campus-based organizations will be conducted in Brightspace
  • Students will have access to Brightspace in May 2024
  • Blackboard continues to be available for fulfillment of outstanding incompletes and course backups
  • Fall 2024 courses created in Brightspace in early June

Fall 2024  - onward

  • All courses and campus-based organizations will be conducted in Brightspace
  • Blackboard continues to be available for fulfillment of outstanding incompletes and course backups
