History Education Partnerships
Opportunities available to Global History majors include:
Exploring the Profession (Sophomores or Juniors)
Students interested in teaching as a potential career will receive permission to enroll in ECPSE 350 “Foundations of Special Education” at Queens College. This course will introduce students to the education profession through in class work and observations of NYC public school classrooms. ECPSE 350 will count as an elective for the Global History degree (and will also reduce the amount of required graduate coursework for those who choose to pursue a career in education).
Accelerated Admission to Queens College School of Education (Juniors)
Students with strong GPAs who have completed most their degree coursework may apply for admission to the accelerated teaching certification program in Social Studies Education, which allows concurrent undergraduate/graduate enrollment during their senior year. Accepted students may take up to three graduate education courses and/or one graduate history course at Queens College while completing their Senior Seminar in History (HIS 425). The fall semester after graduation from John Jay, students will begin the clinical year of student teaching and complete the course for initial certification in May (at which point they will be eligible to be hired by NYC public schools). Students can then complete the MS Ed in Social Studies Education (or the MA in History) at their own pace.
Preferred Admission to Queens College School of Education (Seniors)
Interested students may apply for preferred admission to the Queens College teaching certification program in Social Studies Education during their senior year. After three to four semesters of combined coursework and student teaching, students will be awarded their initial teaching certification (making them eligible to be hired by NYC public schools). Students can then complete the MS Ed in Social Studies Education (or the MA in History) at their own pace.
