Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy & Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act)

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) requires colleges and universities to publish an annual security report. The report contains information regarding campus security including such topics: emergency procedures, crime prevention, university law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, sexual assault prevention, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security on campus. It also contains crime statistics for the previous three calendar years.

In relation to the Clery Act crimes and the following:

  • Larceny-Theft (Except Motor Vehicle Theft)
  • Intimidation
  • Simple Assault
  • Destruction/Damage/Vandalism of Property

Graffiti and vandalism are crimes. If you see or witness any individual writing graffiti or vandalizing JJC property notify Public Safety or call 911. If you see hateful or hurtful graffiti immediately report it to Public Safety.

If you are in doubt as to whether a crime is reportable, please report the matter anyway. With the exception of liquor, drug, and weapons law violations, it is irrelevant whether an arrest is made. For purposes of your reporting, please assume that a hate crime is any crime manifesting evidence that the victim was selected because of the victim’s actual or perceived race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity/national origin, or disability.

Daily Crime Log

The purpose of the Daily Crime Log is to record all criminal incidents and alleged criminal incidents that are reported to the Department of Public Safety.  The log is located in the Department of Public Safety's main office, room L2.61 in the New Building. The log for the most recent 60-day period is open to public inspection, free of charge, upon request, during normal business hours and is available for inspection regardless of one’s association with John Jay College.

Any portion of the log that is older than 60 days will be made available within two business days of a request for inspection. To submit a request to view the log older than 60 days, feel free to come to the Public Safety Office which is located in the New Building room L2.61 during normal business hours or email publicsafety@jjay.cuny.edu to request a time to come in to view the log. 

Campus Security Authorities (CSAs)

Who is a Campus Security Authority?
An official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline and campus judicial proceedings. An official is defined as any person who has the authority and the duty to act or respond to issues on behalf of the institution.

Some positions at the College qualify individuals as a Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).  As such, CSAs are required to report criminal or alleged criminal incidents that come to their attention for inclusion in our campus’ annual crime statistics.  The reporting of accurate and complete statistical information is a requirement under the Jeanne Clery Campus Crime Act.  If you have any questions, please contact Administrative Manager Rabiyyah Williams by e-mail at rwilliams@jjay.cuny.edu or by phone at (212)484-1142 or ext. 1142.  To report an incident of one of the below mentioned crimes, please email: cleryreports@jjay.cuny.edu.

What does a Campus Security Authority do?
The function of a CSA is to report to the office designated by the institution to collect crime report information, The Department of Public Safety, those allegations of Clery Act crimes that he or she receives. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act crimes that are reported to them in their capacity as a CSA. This means that CSAs are not responsible for investigating or reporting incidents that they overhear students talking about in a hallway conversation; that a classmate or student mentions during an in-class discussion; that a victim mentions during a speech, workshop, or any other form of group presentation; or that the CSA otherwise learns about in an indirect manner.

John Jay CSAs include, but are not limited to:

  • Student Affairs/Dean of Students
  • Athletics Director/Coaches
  • Student Housing: Student Housing Staff/ RAs
  • CSIL: faculty advisor to a student group
  • Title IX Coordinator
  • Head of Human Resources
  • Head of IT Department
  • Trip Chaperones
  • Academic Department Chairs

Crime Statistic Report form for Campus Security Authorities
The form should be filled out by CSAs when they receive a report of a Clery Act crime. The form can be submitted directly to the Department of Public Safety’s main office, room L2.61 in the New Building or emailed to cleryreports@jjay.cuny.edu.
